Dr. D. Y. Patil B-School organized an Alumni Interaction Session for the students of the PGDM HR Batch 2026–28 with the objective of providing them with practical exposure to the HR profession through the experiences of an alumnus. The session featured Ms. Tanpreet Kaur, who is currently working as Manager – Human Resources Business Partner at Square Yards, Pune. The session began with a welcome address by the faculty, highlighting the importance of alumni engagement in creating opportunities for experiential learning and connecting students with real-world professional experiences. Ms. Tanpreet Kaur was introduced to the students, and her academic journey and professional progression in the field of Human Resources were shared.
During the interaction, Ms. Kaur spoke about her journey from being an HR student to entering the corporate world and progressively developing her career across different HR functions. She shared her early experience as a Human Resources Intern, where she gained exposure to recruitment, talent sourcing, resume screening, interviews, onboarding, and employee coordination. She further explained how her experience in Talent Acquisition Operations and HR Operations helped her develop a broader understanding of employee lifecycle processes and eventually progress towards the role of an HR Business Partner.
Ms. Kaur explained to students that the HR function offers a wide range of career opportunities beyond recruitment. She discussed areas such as Talent Acquisition, HR Operations, Employee Engagement, HR Business Partnering, Onboarding, Employee Relations, Learning and Development, and HR Technology. The discussion helped students understand that they can explore different HR career paths based on their interests, capabilities, and professional experiences.
A significant part of the session focused on the role of an HR Business Partner. Ms. Kaur explained how HR professionals act as a bridge between employees and management and contribute to creating a positive and productive workplace. She discussed practical responsibilities such as addressing employee queries, supporting policy implementation, assisting managers, facilitating employee lifecycle processes, maintaining employee records, and contributing to employee engagement initiatives. Her practical insights helped students connect concepts studied in the classroom with their actual application in organisations.
Drawing from her experience in Talent Acquisition, Ms. Kaur also discussed the recruitment process and the expectations from HR professionals at the entry level. She highlighted the importance of understanding job requirements, effective candidate sourcing, resume screening, interview coordination, communication with candidates, maintaining recruitment trackers, and ensuring a positive candidate experience. Students were encouraged to develop strong communication and interpersonal skills along with their academic knowledge.
The session also introduced students to the increasing importance of HR technology and HRMS platforms in modern organisations. Ms. Kaur shared her experience of managing employee data and supporting employee lifecycle processes through digital HR systems. She explained that HR professionals today need to be comfortable with technology, data management, documentation, and digital processes to perform effectively in the workplace.
Ms. Kaur emphasized that technical and theoretical knowledge alone is not sufficient for a successful career in HR. She encouraged students to focus on communication, active listening, emotional intelligence, problem-solving, relationship management, adaptability, professional etiquette, and continuous learning. She also advised students to make effective use of internships, live projects, classroom activities, certifications, case studies, industry interactions, and placement preparation to develop their professional profile.
The session was highly interactive, with students enthusiastically participating and asking questions about career opportunities in HR, internships, placements, recruitment, HRBP roles, skills required by organisations, HR technology, corporate culture, interview preparation, and professional growth. Ms. Kaur responded to the questions by sharing practical experiences and examples from her own professional journey. The interaction gave students greater clarity about the realities of working in HR and the different opportunities available to them after completing their management education.
Students were particularly happy to learn about the wide range of opportunities in the HR domain and expressed interest in exploring career paths beyond conventional recruitment roles. The alumni's career journey helped students understand how an HR professional can begin with entry-level responsibilities, gain exposure to different HR processes, continuously build competencies, and gradually progress towards more strategic HR responsibilities.
The session also encouraged students to take greater ownership of their career development and understand the importance of preparing themselves for the expectations of the corporate environment. The real-life experiences shared by Ms. Kaur made the discussion relatable and helped students gain confidence regarding their own career aspirations.
As a token of appreciation, Dr. Asha Kiran felicitated Ms. Tanpreet Kaur on behalf of Dr. D. Y. Patil B-School for sharing her valuable professional experiences and inspiring the students. The session concluded with a vote of thanks, expressing gratitude to the alumni speaker for her valuable time, guidance, and continued association with the institution.
The Alumni Interaction Session was a valuable experiential learning opportunity for the students and reflected the institute's continued commitment to alumni engagement, industry-oriented learning, career readiness, and professional development of management students. The session successfully created a bridge between classroom learning and corporate HR practice and motivated students to actively explore and prepare for diverse career opportunities in Human Resources.
